Knee deep in the hoopla

We had Jefferson Airplane with hits like “White Rabbit” and “Somebody To Love”. This band transformed to Jefferson Starhip including Paul Kantner who helped founding Jefferson Starship in 1974. Ten years later he decided to quit the band. The remaining members disagreed of course. However. This even led them to court because he didn’t want the rest of the band to use the name Jefferson Starhip or at least band named that had Jefferson or Arplane in it. So the solution was to continue simply under the name of Starship. Outside the US Jefferson Starship never scored any hits. But with Starhip that would change.

Mickey Thomas was the new lead singer of the band and is the same person who sung on the big hit of Elvin Bishop “Fooled Around And Fell In Love”. The female vocals are done by the official Jefferson Airplane member Grace Slick who joined the band.

Their first single was an immediate hit everywhere “We Built This City”. Also the second single scored worldwide “Sara”.

The songs on the album are (co) written by producer Peter Wolf, Elton John’s writer Bernie Taupin and Michael Bolton. It is a typical 80’s radio rock album. Starship released some more albums after this one but without success. Only the single for the Mannequin movie also gave them another hit “Nothing Gonna Stop Us Now”.
