The title of their fourth album released in 1968 is what is claims to be. The crown of their creation. The music style ranges from folk/rock roots with a west coast psychedelic sound.

Jefferson Airplane in 1968

They continued the psychedelic sound they already introduced on their previous album "After Bathing At Baxter's", which didn't had the success of their second album "Surrealistic Pillow" which holds their best known songs ever "White Rabbit" and "Somebody To Love". For the album "Crown Of Creation" they moved back to the city they came from: San Francisco.

Kaukonen introduces the wah-wah pedal on his composition "Star Track". And again it was used on "If You Feel". Marty Balin came up with "In Time", "Share A Little Joke" and his best ever "If You Feel".

Greasy Heart - single cover

Grace Slick comes up with her own typical eccentric songs like "Greasy Heart". And also the opener "Lather". A song about drummer Spencer Dryden, whom she was having an afair with, reaching the age of 30. It also refers to the arrest of bassist Jack Casady for nudity at Santa Cruz.

"Triad" was a song not composed by any member of the band  and was offered to them by David Crosby. He wrote it for his band the Byrds but they rejected the song. "Chushingura" is a short experimental piece like on their previous album and is a trip to another world with the emphasis on trip. On "Ice Cream Phoenix" we hear Grace singing about an impossible love.

Crown Of Creation - single cover

The title song was written by Paul Kantner based on John Wyndham's SF book “The Chrysalids". The writer of that other well known book: “The Day Of The Triffids”.  Crown of Creation ends with "The House at Pooneil Corners", a moment by moment account of being in a nuclear explosion.

After the release of this album another album titled "Volunteers" was released with the same classical line up of the band but after that members were leaving the band and after another two albums Jefferson Airplane transformed into Jefferson Starship. Finally in the 80's they made a big comeback under the name of Starship with songs like "We Built This City", "Sara" and "Nothing Gonna Stop Us Now".
