Genesis started their career with the album "From Genesis to Revelation" in 1969. Which was more the work of Jonathan King than the band's own and a false start for their career. The album flopped. Their career really had the start then wanted when the album "Trespass" was finally released in 1970.
Guitarist Anthony Phillips left the band because of stage fright and they fired drummer John Mayhew. They replaced them by Phil Collins and Steve Hackett. Together with Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Peter Gabriel as the lead singer the classic Genesis formation was born releasing 5 albums with this line-up. Which are undoubtedly the best Genesis albums ever.

In 1971 they were becoming famous in the progressive/sympho rock scene with Peter Gabriel as a theatricalized frontman on stage wearing costumes or painted faces. Phil Collins was an exceptional drummer and only occasional sings these days.

The album tells stories from Victorian times for example about the 8-years old Henry Hamilton-Smythe Junior who played a game of croquet with Cynthia Jane De Blaise-William who cut off Henry's head with the mallet during the game. Two weeks later she discovered a musical box and opened it. The ghost of Henry came out but quickly went older and older. Then the Nanny came to see where the music came from and she throw the Musical box towards the by now bearded Henry and Henry was gone as well as the musical box.

This is the first song on the album "Nursery Cryme" and the story was illustrated on the cover of the album. Peter Gabriel proposed a journey between mythology, science fiction and children's stories. A structurally complex disc, full of delicate arpeggios, mellotrons, unthinkable effects for the time, an impressive delicacy and intensity. It all works!
